David,

I would greatly appreciate your input on the recent works at the Killeaton Fields in Derriaghy.

Tension is increasing and emotions are at boiling point with many residents at the moment over the loss of the use of small field

and the onset of seemingly imminent works that are to be carried out in and around the Killeaton Field. This is causing great concern and anxiety.

Residents were appalled to find that, without any prior knowledge, works had commenced and have left the community at a loss of a very valuable amenity.

Trees were planted in a large cluster across the most used part of the field and the grass killed off in another large area for a wildflower meadow.

It was then through various residents and by happenstance, talking to council workers, revealed that the are larger works proposed and already initiated.

Though most of what has been passed around the community is hearsay. It was then discovered that a handful of residents received some information about tree management along their boundaries and nothing about any larger schemes.

No one is against good management of this amenity or the planting of trees or other enhancements – they are against not been consulted about large changes and especially when it impacts their use of the area, their enjoyment of the area and their mental health and wellbeing.

As a spokesperson I am endeavouring to find as much information as I can.

I am requesting that you send me through the actual detail documentation in relation to:

1. The work that has been carried out to date.

2. The committee/s that ratified this work.

3. The councillors involved in the committee/s that agreed this work.

4. The details and survey result of any consultation with the community.

5. The details of any planned or proposed work

6. The Committee that this will or has been presented too.

7. The Consultation process with the community in regards to proposed work.

Yours faithfully

Chris Howie

Killeaton Area Concerned Residents

Just a quick update to keep all informed. - They have been many responses on social media with detailed descriptions of planned works that a number of people have received from council workers and council officers. Many of the details are similar but none give a full picture. Some have left out details of "Car Parks" or "6000 trees" -- I have written today to the Chief Executive, Mr David Burns, requesting the full documentation and details of the active, scheduled and proposed changes to Killeaton Field. A copy of this will be posted directly after this message.
